With one “official” month of summer left before school starts, make sure you take advantage of all the super cool things the city has to offer in August! There are festivals, movie nights and more to choose from - even dragon boat races and a mouth-watering garlic-themed festival!
Did we mention… most of them are FREE, too?
Here are just a few of the fun things happening this month!
SUMMER CINEMA AT THE RICHMOND OLYMPIC OVAL
August 10th & 24th (starting at 7PM)
Hold on to your popcorn - motion seats will be activated! This is “first come first serve” so be sure to plan ahead for these free-entry summer movies. Groups of 5 or more are asked to book well in advance. Jurassic Park will be playing August 10th, and American Graffiti is playing August 24th. We even heard that gratis entry includes popcorn and drinks!
ALL ABOARD! STEVESTON INTERURBAN TRAM
August 18th (12PM - 4PM)
All Aboard! is your ticket to discover Richmond’s transportation heritage. Richmond’s transportation past and present rolls into the Steveston Interurban Tram. Explore Tram Car 1220 and the surrounding site filled with guest transportation experts, live music, children’s crafts and activities and more.
FARM FEST HELD AT GARDEN CITY LANDS
August 11 (10AM - 3PM)
Richmond is celebrating Farm Fest at Garden City Lands with a free family-friendly that includes a farmers market with over 40 artisan vendors, farm demonstrations, interactive farm equipment, food trucks, local musicians, and children’s entertainment. This free public celebration will highlight the history and importance of farming in Richmond as well as the continued development of Garden City Lands. A secure bicycle lock-up will be available onsite and event parking is available at Lansdowne mall.
YVR CHILL OUT AT VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
August 18 (11AM-3PM)
Larry Berg Flight Path Park, Russ Baker Way, Richmond, BC
The event will feature tons of fun family activities - face painting, photo booths, magicians, live entertainment, and some amazing prizes to be won! Swing by the YVR Community tent for a chance to win two free flights to select destinations.
This year’s YVR Chill Out stage will feature live artists including Marine Drive, Trilojay, and more to be announced! Want to check out some sweet yo-yo moves? Yo-yo prodigy Harrison Lee, will be in attendance at this year!
How to get there: Take public transit by taking the Canada Line to Templeton Station, where a rotation of accessible courtesy shuttles will bring you to Flight Path Park. If you’re driving, free parking is available at BCIT Aerospace Campus, and secure bicycle parking will be available with The Bike Valet onsite. Free shuttle bus pick-up between BCIT Aerospace Campus and Templeton Canada Line station to the event.
RICHMOND GARLIC FESTIVAL AT THE SHARING FARM
August 19 (10AM-3PM)
771 Westminister Highway, Richmond, BC
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, this is the ultimate aromatic tribute to all-things garlic! Featuring fresh, local garlicky delights from nearby restaurants, an expanded farmer’s market, live bird of prey flying demos, a “kid’s zone” with tons of farm & nature-themed activities, growing garlic workshops, live Music, farm tours, and more! Check it out - just don’t forget your breath mints!

STEVESTON DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL
August 25 (8AM - 7PM)
Britannia Heritage Shipyard to Imperial Landing in Steveston Village
The Steveston Dragon Boat Festival is back this year at Steveston Harbour and Imperial Landing Park. Steveston comes alive for one of BC’s biggest dragon boat races and one of Richmond’s most popular community festivals. Enjoy dragon boat races, live music, vibrant visual arts, entertainment, children’s activities, and culinary offerings, while kicking back and enjoying a relaxing summer’s day by the water. Parking is available at T. Homma School (5180 Westwater Drive) starting at 7:00 AM for a minimum donation of $5 (proceeds to the Richmond Food Bank). Parking is limited so please carpool.
RICHMOND WORLD FESTIVAL
Minoru Park, Richmond BC
August 31 (4PM - 10PM) & September 1 (11AM - 10PM)
Richmond World Festival is Richmond's major multicultural festival! This festival celebrates Richmond’s significant cultural diversity - and the world is invited to the party. Take in the live entertainment, learn to dance bhangra, participate in the cultural art projects, challenge your friends to a sumo competition, or browse the international marketplace for some quality crafts.
Admission is free
